The Smashing Pumpkins 4th single from their hit album Siamese Dream was Rocket. This was the first song written for the new album and it was played during the Gish tour and over the years is has had a number of alternative takes lyrically and musically.
Billy Corgan said in a webisode, that Rocket is the closet to the Pumpkins natural style, he also notes that the song was a band favorite. In the reissue of Siamese Dream booklet Billy states “I had never bothered to take the time to write any formal lyrics, so I would just fake my way th(r)ough them at each show.”
The band played an acoustic alternative lyrical version of Rocket on London radio before the release of Siamese Dream. On the deluxe edition of the Siamese Dream reissue the second disc contains a demo/rehearsal version of the song which is unique both musically and lyrically. But even when the song was completed with proper music and lyrics the band still mixed it up with a new musical arrangement in 1996.
In 2007 Billy would play Rocket by himself with an acoustics guitar. The song hasn’t been played live since November 2007.
