Flashback Friday: Double Door 1995

In February 1995 the Smashing Pumpkins played four nights of concerts over two weeks at Double Door in Chicago. Some of the processed from the shows went to charities in the Chicago area. The show was advertised to feature all new songs for the Pumpkins next album. The album ended up to be the Smashing Pumpkins best selling album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

The Double Door shows would be the only time you could hear some of these Pumpkins songs live. Until yesterday Jupiter’s Lament hadn’t been played live since the Double Door shows and Mouth of Babes was only played one other time in 1997. But songs such as Speed, Towers of Rabble (both unreleased songs), God, Meladori Magpie, Ugly have still yet to be played since those shows.

Billy Corgan had tweeted back in December 2011 that the Pumpkins had found a Double Door show adat and planed to release the show. He later told Crestfallen in an email that for the Aeroplane Flies High Box Set reissues they are planning on putting together a best-of disc from the soundboard recording of the last three shows.

You can currently find audience audio of the finial three shows on Archive.org if you’d like to take a listen: Show 2, Show 3Show 4

This MTV news reel is the only known footage from the shows.

If you are wondering about the first show at Double Door, from what we know it doesn’t appeared the show was recorded by the Smashing Pumpkins and no known recording or even setlist exist.
