New pictures of the Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie master reel.

Reel 1 of 33

So what do we have here? This afternoon, Crestfallen.com was sent the following pictures. At first glance, I wasn’t even sure what I was looking at other than that the file name was “Reel 01 of 33″ & “Reel 10 of 33″

You can clearly see “the village recorder” logo which is where certain songs for Mellon Collie and Adore were recorded, as well as Age of Innocence on Machina. It also clearly has the name “FLOOD” on it, who helped on all three of those records.

The breakthrough, however, was seeing the names: Alan Moulder and Barry ”sounds like gold” Goldberg which appear in the top right-hand corner. Oh, and that it appears to say “7-1-95″ on “Reel 1 of 33″ under the purple hand that points to their names.

So it appears we have two new pictures of the Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness reel. You may want to wipe that drool off your face.

The Mellon Collie reissue is planned for release later in the year.

Crestfallen.com Friday the 13th Interview with Billy Corgan

On Friday the 13th (April 2012), Crestfallen.com interviewed Billy Corgan over the phone. The interview lasted for well over an hour and covered the reissue process, an in-depth look at the Lucky 13 project, the upcoming release of Oceania, and much more.

For anyone interested in learning more about the Lucky 13 project, I believe this interview will shed some additional light on it.

Potential physical releases from SPRC

On twitter, The Smashing Pumpkins’ digital manager, Rynda Laurel, shared an article that she is featured in from music:)ally about the Smashing Pumpkins Record Club (SPRC).

In the article, Rynda talks about an idea Billy Corgan has about some future physical releases from SPRC. The idea is that fans would be able to “pre-order” a potential physical release. If enough items are pre-ordered to make it worth the cost of manufacturing, then the fans would be billed and they would receive a digital download right away. Subsequently, they would receive the physical product.

Rynda also mentions a Smashing Pumpkins heart necklace that were on sale during the recent European leg of the Pumpkins’ tour. She calls the necklace “really cute,” but wants to ask the fans’ opinion before mass manufacturing them.

EMI Press Release regarding the Smashing Pumpkins reissue

The Smashing Pumpkins’ former label released a Press Release today about the upcoming reissue of Gish and Siamese Dream. In the press release, Billy Corgan is quoted from liner notes that contains an interview between him and David Wild, saying, “We start the album out with ‘Cherub Rock’ which is basically my big F.U. to the indie world. If you read the lyrics, that was basically me railing against the hipper than thou New York indie mentality.”

More legacy songs getting a fresh mix

Billy recently mentioned that the song Starla is going to get a “fresh mix“ by Smashing Pumpkins producer Kerry Brown who is currently having fun preparing the track for the upcoming re-issue which will be released later this year. Today, Billy Corgan also mentioned other songs will be getting fresh mixes: “‘moleasskiss’/'hello kitty (kat)’/'plume’/'(geek?) usa‘/’ussr’ “. You might not know the last song titled “USSR”. Right now, our best guess is that this is an unreleased Siamese Dream outtake.

Smashing Pumpkins are looking to buy original video footage or pictures of early years

Billy Corgan took to twitter today to let everyone know that the Smashing pumpkins are in search for original video footage or original photographs of the band throughout the years. So if you were one of the sneaky fans that were able to slip in your video camera before the open taping policy, or if you happened to be able to take a few good photos with your old-school film camera, contact the band by email: SPRCarchives@gmail.com. Just make sure that you have clear evidence that you own the rights — I am sure the Pumpkins don’t want to re-live the Jonathan Morrill incident.

A Red Rat Easter Egg

A new instrumental demo version of “Tulips”  popped up on the front page of the Smashing Pumpkins’ official website titled “Barb Wire”. You can hear a little “I am One” in it at the start. Tulips appears on the bootleg of Quiet and Other Songs which was leaked out a few years ago after a tape went missing from the Library of Congress or so the legend goes.

Welcome to Bill’s Corner!

Welcome to “Bill’s Corner”  (BC)– a weekly single question and answer with Billy Corgan. On this first installment I got a little greedy and asked 2 questions in one.

Crestfallen.com: With the upcoming reissue of Gish & Siamese Dream due out Nov 15th, what has been the process of choosing which songs to put on the upcoming physical release, and about how many songs did you have to choose from?

Billy: We’ve basically gone through all that we had in the way of cassettes, DAT tapes, and old demos on anything from 4 track to 24 track, and tried to find the songs that when put together told a little ‘extra’ story to the one already told in the official release. For example. ‘Starla’ is a song that deserves to be on the extra disc, because it’s one of the best Gish era songs that’s not on the record. For the fan who says ‘well, I already have that one’, Kerry Brown is doing a fresh mix of it, from the original tapes, that will at least cast some new light or perspective on a mixed version which was done in one long, torrid night in order to make a deadline. The original mix will still appear ‘as is’ on the Pisces release, but with a new remaster from Bob Ludwig.

As far as quantity of materials, we released probably more b-sides than any band in history. So there are some thing unheard by the general public, but alas demos that have been circulated, etc. For that fan that says ‘well, I already have that bedroom demo of Luna’, this will be a freshly mixed copy that will also be available on a 96k/24bit format, and high res files, so you will be able to get the best possible version. In some cases we are finding elements not in the original rough mix, so there are little surprises here and there.

Then there are those forgotten about moments and demos and things which have never been bootlegged, and we have found some of those songs too. It’s a nice mix on the Gish and Siamese extra discs of these pieces, which like I said, will tell a little story from the band’s perspective of what we valued internally.

We also hope to release Gish and Siamese ‘making of’ session tapes, plus every single mix on both albums, so you’ll be able to get all 7 mixes of Soma for example. Each mix is just a little bit different, to where if you listen to all the making of tapes and the varied mixes themselves they do let you peer deeper into our record making process. I know for me, it was coming across a lot of things I’d forgotten about along the way. Even something funny like us playing the riff for ‘bullet with butterfly wings’ while Butch was getting sounds for the Siamese Dream album. It only lasts a minute, but there it is in between us playing Geek and Sweet Home Alabama.

Some real fast highlight:

Drown demo to be the 1st first song for the release from the archive

Oceania is gonna be mixed in September, then hopefully to have it out for your listening pleasure in November.
